  1. Why Can't I do this?1

It generally takes a while for an AK amputee to adjust to a prosthetic. I am a hip disartic and became depressed after receiving my prosthetic. I was encouraged by so many stories, that the reality was too hard to handle. At the time, I gave up trying to use a prosthetic, choosing to use crutches only. Recently, I have started thinking of trying my prosthetic again...this time I know that it may take me a long time to really feel comfortable and proficient...but it may also be worth it. So hang in there...know that it will take time...don't be discouraged by others that don't understand that it is not something that comes easy...if things don't feel right complain until it feels right. Rehab might help you a lot more than you think. Building up your muscles as others have mentioned is also key. You might want to see if a crutch or cane would help you stand straighter and aid in improving your gait. Sometimes walkers cause people to lean forward unnaturally. Also know that there are many people who don't use prosthetics...You will find your way in time, no matter what you choose. Wishing you only the best... Lorri
  2. Our friend Tammie

Tammie, Just signed in after being away for way way too long! Hope you heal soon and are not in any pain! (However, I can feel your pain, I broke my wrist a week ago...) It's tough enough with the leg issue. bit no arm as well...DANG!!! If ya want to commiserate, I'm pretty much hanging out at home for the next month! Lorri
  3. Best prosthetist in Orlando??

Without a doubt POA...Stan and his group will go out of his way to make sure you have the proper fit and the best prosthetic for your needs. http://www.poacfl.com/
  4. Stump Nicknames??

Like a few others, I also call him Stumpy...and it's definitely a HIM because sometimes he's a pain in the a**. The term stump doesn't bother me at all. I actually prefer it to the politically correct term residual limb, because for some reason that term makes me think of residue which is not what I think of my cute little stump. Lorri
  5. Happy Birthday Hopalong !!!

  6. Pre surgery questions to ask the doctor

Thanks all so much! Between Ally, Ann and someone who chose to personally call me, I got my questions answered...I thank you all so very much...I knew I could count on you...You guys always amaze me!!! Thanks again... Lorri
  7. Hi Everyone... Forgive me. I haven't been here for such a long time...(been dealing with a cancer recurrence, needed support from cancer forums...so I've been hanging over there...but it doesn't mean I don't think about many of you!). A friend from one of those forums found out her bone cancer has returned and she will need an amputation. I know there were a bunch of threads that spoke of the kind of questions to ask the orthopedic surgeon before surgery...so phantom pain and pain is lessened after the surgery. I tried to search on my own but could not find them...(must be searching the wrong words!!) My friend will be seeing her doctors on Wed. so time is of the essence...I know I can count on some of you amazing people to help me find the posts that have that information in them... Love you guys!!! Thanks ahead of time for any help you can give... Lorri
  8. Cat--- are you safe?

  9. A SPANISH Teacher was explaining to her class that, in Spanish and several other languages, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine. 'House' for instance, is feminine: 'la casa.' 'Pencil,' however, is masculine: 'el lapiz.' So, a student asked, 'What gender is 'computer'?' Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether 'computer' should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men's group decided that 'computer' should definitely be of the feminine gender ('la computadora'), because: 1. No one but their creator understands their internal logic. 2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else. 3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval. 4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it. (THIS GETS BETTER!) The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine ('el computador'), because: 1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on. 2. They have a lot of data, but still can't think for themselves. 3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem. 4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model. The women won.
