    blister or something else

how nice you are helping your friend! yes, ive had this and it can be fixed. the prosthetic leg needs some adjustment. it is rubbing on that spot. maybe your friend gets blisters when walking more and that one spot then gets irritated. the prosthetist must work on having that spot NOT rubbed by the leg by carving out a space, or having pieces put IN the leg/cup to elevate the stump, move it around, etc i hope this helps
  7. hello! i have always been very active and , after losing my leg 9 yrs ago, have continued. shortly before losing my leg, . of course he is very acti, ofoi spoke to a professional skateboarder who is also an amputeei ,. of course he is not only very active but also accomplished, athletically. very inspiring but he also let me kow frustrating being active can be. exercise, for any person at all, is something i think all should do. the benefits for ANY person include stress relief, mood enhancement, general physical health benefits. being an amputee is stressful for me but everyone has stress. exercise is relaxing and can be tons of fun, good for all taking long walks was always one of my activities and this took time to master again. i went surfing (check out ampsurf.com) i swim. i know amputees who do much more than i do. one can do anything. it just takes some adjustments and patience. i got a special leg for swimming, i need to swim in a pool with railings to get up stairs from pool, biking i need a strap over pedal. these are some of my thoughts. let me know if u need anything else id love to know when the article is completed good luck

A/K Forum n00b With Prosthetic Questions

hello and good good luck to you! ive been a bk for 9 yrs. i know you will be an ak but there are some similarities. all your questions are great and i hope some ak's give you some good info. the advice i have is to meet with a prosthetist now, before the surgery. ask he or she to also put you in touch with some amputees. i had only spoken to one amputee and speaking to more would have been a great help. to hear the good and the bad, just the reality.amputees who are positive and funcitoning and LIVING but are honest about the changes the frustrations. im very active , run a business, and live and you will do the same, take care

    Pain due to prosthetic

how great that you figured this out. we often must figure out what is going on. not that our prosthetists are not good but we are the ones wearing the legs, do tell your prosthetist and it seems some adjustments can be made. good luck

    Swim Leg

my prosthetist, here in california, custom made my swim leg and insurance paid for it. it is like a shell of a leg. the foot is kind of stiff but works. there are HOLES in the calf so water will drain out. yes, i get looks but i get to go in the water so i cant care too much. i dont "swim," as in doing laps but i just go in pools and ocean, the sleeve gets wet and can slip a bit. he made me a 2nd swim leg , too. its just an old leg with flexible foot. he took off the skin cover and made a sort of water proof cover, i dont like to wear leg when metal shows hope this helps

    Need Help!

hello! i dont know if this is good or bad news, but i, too , got itchy rashes and has to switch from a silicone liner to a type of "cup" system. i put a sock on, then leg goes into a custom cup which slides into prosthetic leg. no rashes ever since you could limp a bit if the leg height is off. also, these are fake body parts, they will never work as a real leg, i seem limp often but not always, i am very active and walk far sometimes my leg feels SO heavy, other times, not it just takes time to get used to you sound like youre doing great keep going

sometimes my skin issues have been solved by adjusting the leg, see if prosthetist can add some little pads, when my guy did this, a few times, the pressure is relieved on the cut, sore , area pads can sort of lift the leg, move area where pressure is on leg so there is less on the bottom good luck sue

    plane journeys

how exciting! i recall when i FINALLY had a holiday, after my amputation. ive had many since! such freedom. i suggest NOT taking off your leg on the flight. leg can swell from altitude and getting prosthetist back on could be issue, also, wear a "shrinker" as one of your socks. will keep leg from swelling if you are swimming or in heat, just have extra socks since they might get wet and take SO long to dry other than this, you should have a great time,

    pimple on kneecap

yes chemist sounds good. oil on a pimple sounds like it helps the pimple! ive had to see a dermotologist/chemist , a few times, to help with rashes on my leg also, see your prothetists, maybe leg is rubbing in that one spot and he/she can shave inside of leg a bit
  19. wow just your post , in writing, is inspirational do the video! i dont kow where u live but, here in the usa, there are organizations like challenged athletes, ampusurf, and even the military who are very very active even though amputees maybe they would welcome this video moving couches?? can you come rearrange my furniture?? ha ha

    Anyone who don't wear prothesis?

hi im bk but i read about MANY changes with ak. sadly , so many people in the military lost limbs in current war. i think this put a lot of focus on amputees. do check with one or two prosthetics to see if there is now something for you, do some on line searches , too/ good luck
  21. hello1 i must say, your attitude and activity are so positive! ive been an amputee for 8 yrs. i have a leg i love (about 3 yrs old and im getting a new one , soon) i have the sleeve but , just in last yr, i had to have adjustments done on socket. pads were added, i lost only a little weight and this can make a difference, as you see also, i think, over time, our leg can change a bit, for example, i was getting a bit of a cut in one small area. my leg must have just changed, a bit, so porthetist added a pad and all was ok now, after 3 yrs, i have a few pads added so a new leg/socket will fit better to accommodate the changes i wonder why you went from sleeve to pin? i had pin for about 2 yrs and it was not good for me, terrible rashes ( with socket i wear sock next to skin) and getting pin to "click " was issue i see the solution for you to keep seeing prothsitst when u have a blister, cut, rubbing but why not just go back to pin if u loved it? good good luck

    Skin Protection

hello! wow i understand how you feel. i had pin for a few yrs and has such horrible skin issues. my leg would be bright red and so itchy. i would put ice on it and didnt know how i could live like this, hang on til you get your new leg! it was like a miracle. i never get such problems now
  23. sueflayy

    whats a good liner

hello! i think you can get relief from the bruising. yes, a new liner could help. also, though, your leg should be more supported on the sides, the leg shouldnt be touching the bottom of leg, makes sense? see if prothetist can make leg hang on to the sides of your leg, i just had a new pad added, today, so leg would fit better, always changes needed but no all so often good luck

    Frustrated with some questions.

welcome to the world of an amputee! ugg! ive been an amputee for 7 yrs. just last week, i went to have one of my legs adjusted. 6 months ago, the other one, getting the legs adjusted is not an all the time thing, but it happens, and one problem can need a few times of adjusting, its frustrating but just know it is part of the process. with you being a new amputee, expect to need more adjustments that you might in the future, our bodys just are not used to having a "fake" leg. great we can have them and that you are so active, but adjustments are normal, keep going!
