Fitness for Everyone Clinic 13Sep03

Recommended Posts

The Fitness For Everyone Clinic is a full-day interactive clinic for

amputees, their family members and friends, therapists and other

healthcare professionals. The clinic is coming to the Tampa Bay area

on Saturday, September 13, 2003, 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza

Hotel (700 N. Westshore Blvd.). Three-time Paralympic track and field

champions Dennis Oehler and Todd Schaffhauser will lead the clinic,

which is being sponsored by Endolite and Westcoast Brace & Limb. The

clinic will provide amputees of all ages with instruction in

stretching, strengthening, walking and running, and also some tips

for those looking to achieve their own physical goals.

Clinic attendees will learn stretches and resistance exercises that

are specific to amputees to increase strength and flexibility. They

also will learn about the working dynamics of the prosthesis and how

to employ the muscles of the residual limb to move it more

efficiently. Depending upon the amputee’s rehab level, he/she also

will learn essential physical skills, including walking, running,

jumping, bending and maneuvering generally with a prosthetic device.

New amputees who are not wearing a prosthesis or who are unsure

about getting active are encouraged to attend and interact with

Oehler and Schaffhauser, other amputees and healthcare professionals

in an informal setting. The clinic also is designed to promote

confidence, strength and flexibility during ambulation, yielding more

efficient daily operation and less expansion of energy.

The clinic costs $15 for amputees and family members/exercise

partners, $30 for students and $60 for healthcare professionals. The

registration fee includes clinic materials, continuing education

credits for therapists and nurses, goody bag and lunch. Any proceeds

from the event will be donated to Amputees Together, a Tampa Bay area

amputee support group. For more information about the clinic or for

registration information, please contact Courtney at (813) 985-5000 x

Brenda,

Thanks for the info! I have been waiting for this clinic to come close to Central Florida. I saw their website at least 4 months ago, and my PT actually helped with on of their programs - said it is great. I just had some surgery, but hope to attend with another amputee friend. Any chance you will be there?

YES I'm going to be there. My therapist is going with me and we might end up there on Friday the 12th. I hope to see you there. I'll be bringing my running leg so you won't be able to miss me.

I hope you can make it and we will finally be able to meet.

These clinics sound great! Do you know whether they travel to countries other than the States? I'd really be interested in attending one.

Mandy,

They travel all over and have traveled abroad. I'll ask them if and when they will be traveling abroad in the future.

Today was an awesome day! Full of wonderful opportunities!

1. I met Brenda. We live within an hour of each other and have been trying to set up a meeting. Her inspirational story was a benefit to everyone, and in the afternoon she put on her running leg and off she went…

2. The Fitness for Everyone Clinic was incredible, everything I thought it would be and then some. Dennis Oehler and Todd Schaffhauser are most inspiring (just ask Brenda about her first clinic and the changes it meant in her life). The clinic was comprised of amputees, physical & occupational therapists, assistances, trainees, students, nurses, etc. We laughed at Dennis' stories, and were thrilled with each amputee’s success.

3. On a very personal note… I jogged across the room and back several times- a first since becoming an amputee 6 months ago. It was absolutely wonderful!

Yesterday was so AWESOME!!! I got to see the two guys that changed my life last year when I saw them in Orlando FL.. Dennis and Todd continue to touch my life in a positive way and yesterday was no different. If you ever have a chance to attend one of their clinics it is worth the $15.00 to attend. They are up there teaching amputees at all levels of amputation to be professional amputees. When I left yesterday I left with a heavy heart because I was leaving these two guys that I felt like I had become friends with.

On another note I got to meet Deb and watch her run for the first time since her amputation and what a wonderful site. You Go Girl!!! I'm proud of you.....

Shay,

www.fitnessforeveryone.com or you can go to opfund.org. You might have to call the opfund and ask them when they will be in your area.
