what'ya doin' this weekend

Hi Marilyn,

We have Monday as a bank holiday and it's just called May Bank Holiday or May Day ... how original is that

That's very odd (to me!). Here in the US we have holidays that the banks close for such as Columbus Day (the guy who discovered America) or Memorial Day (a day set aside to honor the dead, especially military), but never a holiday just for banks! :D I need to tell my sister, she is a bank manager!

   it's not just for banks, this one has it's roots in our Pagan past, the first day in may or 'May day 'used to be a day when all the maidens would pair up with eligeable menfolk. It's kind of a fertility type celebration. they would dance around the maypole too (which is supposed to be the yule tree with the branches striped off).

I'm not quite sure why it's called a BANK holiday, I think its because the banks and shops are supposed to get the day off (of course these days the shops are open everyday, but the banks are definately closed!)

I'm not explaining very well am I?

i'll stop now, sorry, i'm bored :rolleyes::unsure:

Well Friday I had the play.

Today I'm cleaning/ unpacking my room. hehehe I moved in the end of Febuary and I'm still not unpacked. I'm a silly Shelley.

Later on tonight I may get draged to pool with My Boyfriend and his pals. I will only go if some one else buys me drinks and food. I hate playing pool because I'm better then my Boyfriend and I think it makes him feel bad. I can't drink as much as I did last Saturday because I don't want to get sick again.

Sunday I finish cleaning my room...we all know it won't be done today. Then at 8 I go to my old highschool for the Holocaust memorial service.

Hey Sunshine,

I have been driving with a left foot acclerator for a year and a half. It' s as normal as breathing. I only goofed up a couple of times in the beginning then it just started to feel right as rain. Fortunately, I didn't go thru any houses :o You'll do fine.

A bank holiday isn't a holiday JUST for banks, Marilyn. ;) Bank holidays are public holidays and it's when the banks are officially closed.

I think May Day has been celebrated for a long time over here, for reasons I can't think of just at the moment. But, I've found some info on May Day celebrations in England for you. :)

Lizzie :)

  Ok, ok, I understand! In American terms, this Monday is May Day, which just so happens to be a bank holiday -- right? It's all semantics! And I have heard of May Day... I have seen pictures of little girls dressed up prettily (Martha here!) and dancing around the maypole with ribbons.

Yes, that's right! :D

Little girls...and boys (a few years ago, my son was one) dancing around the Maypole...and the Morris Dancers, don't forget the Morris Dancers! ;)

Morris Dancers is a completely new one on me! (See, I'm learning stuff all the time here!) I've heard of an Irish jig though, for what it's worth. And here in the US our version of folk dance would be Square dancing. (One of these days, I'll start being like Lizzie and providing links!)

Hi, Marilyn...

May Day, I gather, USED to be celebrated here, but was declared "politically inappropriate" sometime around the 1950s because the Soviets celebrated it as a "socialist workers' holiday." It never really seemed to recover from its banishment.

I used to LOVE May Day, even if it was a "suspect" holiday... my Mom would help me gather flowers from the yard and make little paper cones, to be filled with the flowers... and early in the morning, I'd sneak around the neighborhood and hang my "May Baskets" on folks' doorknobs. Such a nice, simple little holiday.....!

This weekend, I'm stuck at home, nursing a large blister on my one remaining big toe. (Sigh.....................)

take care... cherylm

may I remind you that whilst you lot are enjoying yourselves, I'm not well and need sympathy, :P

in fact it got worse today... now my eyes are almost shut with the swelling!

I mean, I feel better.... but I look like I've been hit with a frying pan.

Rick's off hang gliding again so I'm home alone too :(

Yesterday I had to order the lime green crocs to entertain myself

Hi Hazel,

I hope you are feeling a bit better today. If you have the same nice weather as we have finally got here, take yourself into the garden with a cold drink and let all of them vitamin d's soak in.

Love yvonne

In that case, maybe you need to update your photo in the 'What do you look like thread'

Seriously though H, sorry to see you are still going through a tough time.

I promise not to enjoy myself quite so much tomorrow, just to make you feel better :D

I am sorry to hear you aren't feeling great Hazel - it is always the way when there is something to look forward to like a long weekend I find. Then by Monday (or Tuesday in our case) you are feeling fine and are perfectly well for work.....typical.

Well we had a big black tie dinner thing for work on Friday night. I have very little memory of anything that happened after about midnight, but discovered yesterday that I had to be taken home after I fell off my chair whilst swigging out of a bottle of champagne I was sharing with the head of our corporate department. How much of a lush am I?? I am mortified.

And I smoked. After four months of giving up. I am a bad bad person.

I really really really don't want to have to go back there on Tuesday.

As for the weekend, I shall be hiding at home away from the dreaded tourists

Steve[/color]

I know what you mean with those tourist types, they block the roads in and out of our village rain or shine all year round. I think it's the price we have to pay for living in a nice area :P

Hi Marcia,

Thanks, That makes me feel so much better.

Saying that, the assessor told me that he trained this guy with a left foot accelerator and he saw him years later and asked how he was. The guy said that 4 years after driving his modified car he was at a T junction and instead of the brake, he hit the accelerator and went right across the road and then into a ditch (no one was injured).

Very reasurring eh

Love Yvonne

xx

Hi Everyone,

just thought I would let you know how the BBQ went. I bought a gas BBQ for the occasion constructed it.

Then I got 'er from No 20 to test it for gas leaks, but after a while she came and told me the wind kept blowing the match's out.

Anyway, the rains came so we had to cook it all indoors on the cooker. Everyone had a great time anyway, and I actually stayed sober.

As........

Steve

You could always use your new BBQ next Bank Holiday, Steve...you never know, it may be ideal BBQ weather at the end of the month! :P
