Legless driver in 80mph car chase

A double amputee has been jailed for a year after leading police on a high-speed car pursuit, using modified broom handles to control the vehicle.

The three-mile chase ended when Robert Bate crashed through a fence near Hawthorn, County Durham, in January.

When officers examined his automatic Vauxhall Astra they found the wooden poles duct-taped to the pedals.

Bate, 27, of Seventh Street, Blackhall, admitted dangerous driving when he appeared at Newcastle Crown Court.

The court heard that a marked police car spotted the Astra on a stretch of the B1285 near Hawthorn.

It stopped briefly when police activated their sirens and blue lights, but then sped off unexpectedly towards a retail park in nearby Murton.

After three miles, the car left the road and careered through a fence and hedgerow before stopping in a farmer's field.

Melinda Blackburn, prosecuting, said: "When the Astra was examined, police noticed there was a couple of implements attached to the pedals with ducting tape to help him drive the vehicle due to the fact he is a double amputee.

"Broom handles were attached to the accelerator and brake pedal."

Bate, who lost his legs in a rail accident when he was aged nine, had traces of heroin and cocaine in his blood at the time of the incident.

Nick Cartmell, defending, told the court: "He recognises now that this was a foolish and stupid exercise.

Driving ban

"At nine-years-old tragedy took everything from him but he hates to be reliant on anyone."

Two passengers in the Astra at the time were unhurt.

After hearing how he fled at high speed through former mining villages, Judge David Hodson told him it was a miracle nobody else was injured.

Bate also admitted driving while unfit through drink or drugs, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and failing to stop.

In addition to the 12-month jail sentence, he was banned from driving for two years.

Well, Cat, I think it may depend upon whether you use modified broom handles or not.

When I first got home from the hospital and until I could get my left leg limber enough to do the gas & brake I used a pool cue to work the gas peddle for a couple of weeks, but I never got over 30 mph. I swear.

Jim, I have checked various reports and cannot find any mention of him being prosecuted or fined for using broom handles to drive.

Earlier this year, I went to a MAS socket seminar in New York. While there, I met a lady who lost her leg (AK) after a legless man, driving with sticks, ran a stop sign and hit her car while he was running from police!!

As some of you know, my father is an AK/BK. He was once stopped for speeding and the cop let him go after seeing that he --you guessed it--had no legs and was driving with canes! :D

Well, the link Lynne found had this:

It was then that officers noticed the two metal poles he had earlier obtained from a scrapyard taped to the accelerator and brake pedals, the court heard.

As he was jailed for 12 months for dangerous driving and a series of motoring offences, his friends claimed that he had adapted the car weeks before his arrest and had driven it at least 20 times.

Judge David Hodson, sentencing him at Newcastle Crown Court, said: "You were driving a vehicle which you yourself had, in a Heath Robinson sort of way, adapted to drive because of your disability.

"It was a miracle no one else was injured."

I suppose the series of motoring offences included him using his poles...?

This may not have been the most prudent thing to do, but you have to give the guy credit for creativity.

It just show's that our brains were not in the leg that they removed - as some people seem to think. <_<

Some people's common sense maybe - but not the brains. :P :P
