American Idol Comment Demeaning Amputees

Recommended Posts

Well I watched it, wasn't offended by it. Yes we have to take a stand on discrimination etc but..it was a flippant remark, made on a commercialised tv series..so what - there was no malice meant.

I have made flippant remarks about my status as an amputee with my friends, BUT I also know that if someone said something rude and offensive about me, to me, in a nasty and malicious way - they would be the 1st to respond as would I. I have a sense of humour and thank goodness for it - I know I need it on times!

Before we get all moralistic about it - lighten up, it was stupid and tactless - but that's why millions of people tune in to it!

Sue.

How sad.....but so very, very true! It's the cheap shot rubbish that keeps things rolling, the way the world moves today. Morals? What are they? Very sad indeed! :(

Lighten up, don't be offended. Cheap shot. Hum????????????????????

Morals?????

Gosh, not really sure how else to explain.

The idiocy of Simon is not as huge as the networks.

Get it?????

Yes people make insensitve comments all the time.

You who said this are right.

But you know what, don't name a TV program with AMERICAN in it if it states this is ok.

I am proud of my country, of our hero's.

Don't ya get it, it is about the network not doing anything!!!!!!!!!!

Not all about the jerk who said it.

Hum? Who the hell needs morals?

But I guess, it is still ok to hurt others, is that the drift I get. Don't sling me a crap that being insensetive is ok. Go tell you girlfriend, wife that outfit makes you look fat. Tell you husband or boyfriend or lover gosh my other lover was bigger. Then tell me is insensative comments are they ok.

Wow. Such a tempest in a tea pot over a perhaps misplaced comment from of all people, a TV personality who get's paid to create attention.

Some of us are more sensitive than others over our amputations - and our weight, and our height, and our color, and our age, and our wealth, (or lack of it), and our looks, and our clothes, and our religion, and our politics, and our country, and, and, and..............

Just listening (reading) to the diversity of opinions and comments on this post brings me back to what I said before, which is:

Everyday, someone, somewhere, somehow is going to say something that will offend some one.

If I took umbrage at everything I heard, I would be at war all of the time. There's a time and place for everything, including verbal battles, (wars), and the comments of a TV personality, just don't rank up there in the top layers of importance to me.

I don't think Conal is doing any of this writing to networks etc for any personal gain. He is viewing the offence by the network as the serious point and has gone into battle for all amputees.

His list of demands are reasonable to put to an organisation with thousands of employees and departments totally devoted to "Diversity Development." Whether the network then accedes to the list given for consideration is another matter entirely. But if you don't ask you don't get.

One thing is certain though Conal has certainly stirred up a great debate.

If that's your way of starting an argument, it's not going to work! ;)

Hi

Where as all the fun gone from this forum?.

I have been a member over 4 years and thing's seem to be getting very serious with debates now.

If we are offended by what someone may say then I think it's about time I left.

We as Amputee's have to put up with a lot but I always try to see the funny side of thing's and in my case 2 Amputation in 28 day's was enough for me to see thing's that are important in life rather than make a fuss over a comment made on TV.

Conal...

You might say that this board contains a fairly large and varied group of amputees which is probably a fairly representative sample of amputees as a whole.

If you have bothered to read any of the replies to your post you might notice that the majority of them see Simon Cowell's comments as a throwaway comment which wasn't intended to or infact in most cases even cause offence. I appreciate that discrimination against ANY group of society is wrong BUT making a comment like that does not show discrimination, I would say that it is a perfectly reasonable simile. The fact is (as has been pointed out) that the vast majority of amputees are not especially good at the 100 meter sprint. Personally I think that to take such action as you have demanding this that and the next thing in the name of amputee discrimination and making so much of what most people here (again your representative amputee sample) think was a trivial comment smacks of not much more than massaging your own ego.

Fair enough some people may have been offended by it but what on earth was wrong with writing to Fox and just making them aware of the offence they may have caused without jumping off the deep-end? It is people ranting like that in the name of "disabled rights" that builds up so much damn resistance and resentment towards such things as the DDA which surely has a much higher purpose, ie in providing equal job opportunities etc.

Anyway folks sorry for the rant, just thought I'd chuck in my twopence worth :P

I dont know what you must all think of Anne Robinson then from the

Weakest Link aka the Queen of Mean I dont intend to open another can

of worms but her intentional witty quips or those that dont take them as such,

far exceed Simon Cowells comment by a mile. The mole hill has turned into

a mountain, lets keep it in context.

Loved your post, Mike. That comment doesn't offend me either. I guess I'm not very sensitive. I sure can't do the 100 meter sprint. It's just one of those comparisons that really aren't meant to be taken personally. Heck, we all post and read amputee jokes. Simon Cowell's an ass. He gets paid well to be one. And I don't think that's the same thing as someone calling your kid a cripple on the playground - to me it isn't, anyway. I've never had to take my leg off in the airport either. Sometimes we just need to find the humour in life

And keep voicing our opinions :D

I have had nearly 42 yrs of being different and in that time I have seen and heard it all. I can tell you that kids at school are far nastier than either Anne Robinson or Simon Cowell. I have said the following before.

It doesn't matter to me what people say, what jokes they tell or what labels they put on me because they say absolutely nothing about me just says everything about them.

It is people ranting like that in the name of "disabled rights" that builds up so much damn resistance and resentment towards such things as the DDA which surely has a much higher purpose, ie in providing equal job opportunities etc.

Well said Mike, couldn't have put it better.
