JohnnyV 14 Report post Posted September 3, 2008 An amputee buddy of mine that I met when he lived in Vermont and was starting up a support group a couple of years back just sent this to me. I thought that it was worth sharing with everybody. I have not seen the movie, but I respect the point of view, and will think twice before using the "R' word from here on out. I don’t know how many of you have heard, but there is a movie out that ridicules people with developmental disabilities. The movie is Tropic Thunder. It repeatedly uses the “R” word in the movie which is a offensive portrayal of people with developmental disabilities. I hope that all of you will support people with disabilities by not attending or supporting this movie. APRIL, which is the Association of Programs for Rural Independent Living has developed a response to this offense. Click on the link below to see a great response to this terrible attitude that the movie industry has allowed. Remember, “RESPECT” is the correct “R” word. Bob Barker Hays, KS In response to the film Tropic Thunder and its incredibly offensive portrayal of people with developmental disabilities (particularly, its frequent use of the "R" word), the ARCs of Virginia and Northern Virginia developed this public service announcement: http://www.blueberryshoes.com/psa/index.html It's brief and well worth watching! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Distributed to APRIL members at the request of Dawn Francis, Executive Director, Iowa SILC, by: Diana L.
